This is my first post in this subreddit (I found it tonight) so I just wanted to introduce myself. I'm 24 years old and I'm really hoping that I can stick to a journey of finally losing weight. I've struggled with being overweight my whole life, as I'm sure many of you on here can relate to, and I am really starting to notice the physical effects of my weight gain. It got much worse during the pandemic, and I'm devastated to be at the point where I'm now having trouble walking without pain.
The pain is pretty much all in my ankles. I've sprained each ankle several times, and it seems it finally has caught up to me. I'm at the point where they begin to burn after walking just 10 minutes, and I'm scared it's only getting worse. If I'm being honest, I'm miserable. I feel like I'll never be able to enjoy the little things like hiking, strolling around a city, or even just going on a short walk with my family. I know losing weight will alleviate this pain, and I know I need to work past my own mental limitations to start this process.
So to start- I'm looking for some advice. For those of you who had success losing weight, did you find success starting with a consistent workout routine? Or was it easier to just focus on a diet in the beginning and then move to exercising once you've lost some weight? For those of you who experienced chronic pain, especially in legs or ankles, what were some exercises that worked for you that didn't exacerbate the pain?
Any and all advice is greatly appreciated. I look up to everyone who has started this journey, no matter where you are in it, and I really hope I can channel some of that energy and momentum to get myself on the right path so I can finally take that hike without worrying about the pain.
