NSV - Why it’s okay to NOT make beautiful, homemade meals with vegetables every meal

I’m a hybrid worker that goes into the office 0-3 days a week, and today happened to be a day I needed to go in. Since I started working on my eating and my health again about 3 weeks ago, I have been packing calorie-counted breakfast, lunch, snack(s) every day I go in. I work a lottt of hours in my field but typically will leave the office by 7-7:30, eat, and log back on after dinner if needed. If I’m working at home I typically eat dinner around 8-8:30.

Well, today didn’t go according to plan. I didn’t get to leave the office until 9pm and once I got home I had to attend to an urgent email. I didnt end up eating til 10:15pm. In the past when losing weight, a situation like this would have left me hangry, starving, and frustrated that I didn’t have time to cook a lovely, vegetable-filled perfect macro meal. My “all or nothing” mindset would have led me to go through the McDonald’s drive through and order 4 sandwiches, get a large pizza delivered and devour the whole thing, or search my kitchen for anything to binge on

Instead, today I made a microwave pasta meal (420cal), a cup of cheesy popcorn (80 cal), and a clementine (40 cal). Was it the healthiest meal in the world? Absolutely not. Did it have an ideal amount of protein? No. But I still finished my day at 1740 calories (my current goal is 1500-1900 depending on the day) and 28% protein/40% carbs/32% fat (trying to get between 25-45% on each macro every day). I fit well within my goals, and didn’t let a change of plans induce a binge!!!!

This is why it’s important to remember that not every meal needs to be chicken, rice, and broccoli. Life happens, and for me, I’ve realized it’s good to have some frozen meals in the freezer for backup on a tough day. A lazy meal can still follow CICO!
