Just had an epiphany moment about eating socially and wanted to share it in case it’s relevant to anyone else!
So I was out with friends last night and we had tons of snacks out that everyone was munching on throughout the night. Almost all my friends are quite fit and health-aware so I felt comfortable snacking alongside them — if everyone else is doing it and they are fit, then it must be fine for me too, right?
But by the end of the night, I was STUFFED. My stomach hurt and I was beyond full and bloated. However, everyone else seemed happy and totally fine. I was SO confused about why nobody else felt as full and sick as me. I was positive I was only eating when I saw others eating? Is my metabolism just that much worse than everyone else’s??
It was then that I realized that I was the only one who had been eating ALL night. Seeing other people eat makes me eat, so in a group of 10 people, every time one other person ate I ALSO subconsciously mimicked them and ate something too. There was basically never a moment where I wasn’t eating the entire night, even though maybe only a few other people were eating at any one given time.
Next time, my plan is to “copy” 1-2 friends who have good eating habits and try to not eat much more than they do. This should help me focus on reasonable amounts of food and not get triggered to snack every time anyone else in the room eats, which is what I do when I zone out at social events.
Is this relatable to anyone? Any other strategies for social eating? Hopefully this strategy/awareness is helpful to someone else!
