With the corona madness going around, life is turned upside down.
But I know this: except for being overweight, I am healthy right now. It is such a gift. And it is my DUTY to stay as healthy as possible, so that I don't overwhelm the medical field or become a risk to my frailer family members and neighbours.
If you're wondering what you can do in this unprecedented crisis: you are an integral part of the auxiliary forces. Your duty is as follows:
-
Eat healthy: boost that immune system. You don't want to catch anything now, whether it's corona or a regular flu.
-
Eat enough, but not too much: you want to lessen your chance of developing heart disease, diabetes, depression etc. The healthcare field needs all the spare hands it can get. Don't take it lightly.
-
Shop only once a week. Limit your time in a store. Buy what you need, leave the rest. There is plenty in the world.
-
Go for a walk, but keep your distance from others. Some sunlight will work wonders.
-
Do bodyweight exercises and cardio at home. Seriously, just go on youtube. If you live in a flat and are worried about noise, search "low impact" exercises. Those are mostly stationary so you don't have to jump around and piss off your neighbours. But boy, they get you sweating.
-
Get some sleep. Seriously, sleep enough, it's integral to your health.
-
Mind your mental health. Take breaks from the media and try to relax. Youtube has guided meditations. Write down 5 words or pages about how you're feeling. Doesn't matter, just check in with yourself. Call your family and friends. Do some mindfulness exercise. An example: sit down in a calm space. Name 5 things you can see, 4 things you can hear, 3 things you can feel, 2 things you can smell and 1 thing you can taste. Easy centering exercise to be in the here and now. Or do breathing exercises.
Work on your health. It's not about you anymore - the world is counting on you.
