My boyfriend and I have talked about marriage and kids before, but last night he told me that while he thinks I’m the one, he can’t have a future with me unless I lose weight. I have been overweight ever since we met (I am just 10 lb overweight so it’s not impacting my health). I confided in him that I put on 50 lb in the past year due to emotional eating after sexual assault. He said he accepts me and I have been slowly losing weight. But yesterday he explained that he wants to have a thin wife so that he’ll look good in front of his friends. He also says he’s already being very generous by being with me although I’m a minority and he’s white.
I don’t know if I’m ready to continue a relationship with someone who says things like I look terrible and make him look bad, but I’m very confused because he was very nice to me before this. Also I know that I should get into a normal weight range and that I shouldn’t have eaten so much to cope with what I went through.
tl;dr: My boyfriend says that he will only be ready to talk about a future with me if I lose weight.
