Is there a way to monitor food/calorie intake without counting calories? I find the need to constantly be looking up calories, calculating etc makes me abandon after a few days...

I'm imagining perhaps there's a system I can use like only have carbs (bread/pasta/whatever) once a day, or only have a small bowl of whatever, or something like that. Just a set of rules to abide by, which would make it MUCH easier for me to stick to monitoring my intake, as I will never consistently monitor my calories in the way apps like My Fitness Pal etc are designed. I just won't.

I'm great at self discipline - I quit drinking cold turkey 10 years ago after drinking heavily for the 20 years before that - my brain just doesn't love the counting technique. I'm sure I'm not alone in this.

Edit: I should add that, like many others I'm sure, I have a really busy professional life running a small business, and I have two kids under the age of 2, so I'm very fortunate to get 45 minutes to go to the gym every second day - really don't have time or scope for a lot of what it seems is recommended.
