Hi
I’ve been a lurker for a long time – but in an effort to keep me honest I thought that this year I’d post regular updates about my 2021 weight loss journey.
I’ve had success previously with calorie counting in MyFitnessPal, losing over 10kg, but then stopped it and my weight gradually crept up again by 15kg to a point where I’m close to my heaviest ever.
Last year was a hell year for various reasons and focus on my health went out the window, so this year I’m focusing on introducing a new habit every month. And from that I hope the weight will take care of itself.
My habits for introducing and bedding in a new habit every month so far are:
January
- Habit goal #1: logging calories in MFP every single day.
- Update: successful, and continued since. Note in January I didn’t restrict calories at all, just logged everything I ate.
- Weight loss: 1kg
February
- Habit goal #2: Make sure I’m under calorie goal at least 3 days per week (Set MFP goal to be 0.8kg loss per week)
-
Update: Success for 1 out of the 2 weeks of Feb so far
-
Habit goal #3: Walk/cardio exercise 3 times per week for at least 45 mins
-
Update: Success for 2 out of the 2 weeks of Feb so far
I’d love your ideas for future habit goals. My original intent was to focus on just 1 per month, but I started doing March’s goal of 3 walks per week early. I’m interested not just in habits that will help be lose weight, but ones that just make me have better mental health as well.
My main ideas for more habits are:
-
Weight training habit
-
Reduced sugar/no sugar
-
Various increases to both the calorie restriction and regular exercise goals
I’ve been using the HabitBull app to set and track habit ‘streaks’ so far, and I’m finding that quiet motivating so far.
So, I’d love your tips and ideas if you’ve tried something similar. I’m all about ‘slowly slowly wins the race’ this year as I really want to gradually build good habits.
Cheers
