CICO: Is it a strategy that can be done forever?

CICO for me is very effective. It does work without any problems. When I do it, it is a downward progress that just continues going down. I had a great victory 5 years ago with CICO and I lost a lot of weight. It is very easy and intuitive for me. I just measure everything and check from time to time to see how I am going and make the necessary adjustments whenever needed. I prefer this over any other strategy because I don't have to worry about what I eat. I can eat anything I want if it falls under my caloric budget. I do not have restrictions on what I eat, but naturally I start eating more healthy so it is, for me, satisfying and an eating habit I would be happy to continue.

But then I stopped doing it, and gained all the weight back. Since then tried getting back to CICO again. Everything I do it, I have some small success that lasts some time. But if I fall out of it, I gain a lot of weight and after some time I am weighting more than when I started. And when I do CICO but without really counting, I stop being in control because I underestimate everything and I think I am doing right but the scale is giving me evidence that I am not.

So, my question is: if the process is doable, if it does not add a restriction that I don't want and if I enjoy doing it because I can see the results and because I naturally become inclined to a more healthy life style in terms of eating good food and doing exercises, the fact that I've dropped out several times and had a lot of difficulties getting back to it, does it make it a bad strategy? If it is possible to do CICO in the long term, then I think I will have to work with myself and try to understand and solve why I keep dropping out and why it is so difficult to get back on track. But if it is not the case of being future proof, then isn't this a waste?

How future proof can it be? I am 31 now. Can I imagine myself as a 80 grampa and becoming the topic of conversation of my family, like "there goes ol' grampa again with his scale from 2020 and his notebook measuring his broccoli..."? Or is it so unnatural that I should seek something different?

For people doing CICO, how long have you been doing it?
