How to Avoid the Nauseous Feelings of Working Out

First, big props to all you who are working toward fitness goals. I love the stories you share - they're inspiring to everyone who feels like it's an impossible journey.

I have started going to the gym lately. I'd like to lose 20 lbs, but 30-40 lbs would be amazing. I used to play soccer and could run all day for games. I have tried to incorporate some strength training but also cardio work. I find that the cardio is killing me. I remember going to the gym about 1-2 years ago and doing 20-25 minutes on ellipticals okay. I mean, I was winded, but made it. As I start things back up, I find that I have to cut the workout short to like 12-15 minutes. I'm trying to go hard with some interval work, and my heartrate is getting up to 150-170.

My first question is really rhetorical - Why can't I go anywhere near what I had 1-2 years ago? I wasn't exactly qualifying for Olympics then but the endurance seems a lot lower.

More to the point - I hear about the runner's high, which is the opposite of my experience. I make sure it's at least a couple hours since eating, so I don't think that's the problem. I don't chug milk on the way to the gym. But that feeling that I'm going to be ill has cut the last couple workouts short. Any tips or ideas are welcome.
