Help or assurance needed

5'10" SW: 253 CW: 225 GW: 160

Hi everyone,

I'm a long time lurker that finally got an account. I've been debating whether to post for awhile. I need your input on something, but I have high anxiety over the issue, so I'm looking for help or assurance. I started dieting in July, but I've been going to a weightloss center for the last 7 weeks, and on my diet for 6 weeks. The doctor was recommended by my GP, and I suffer from pretty severe IBS . The doctor works with a couple of dieticians in office. That's the background.

I was put on a low carb, high protein diet, and can only eat 950 calories a day. I see the doctor every 2 weeks, and the 950 calories is only for12 weeks. (I'm on week 6). I'm to call them if I feel severely off in any way. I have been prescribed phentermine while on this diet. The goal is to get to 200lbs, then raise my calories above 1200 and incorporate exercise. (I have some previous hip injuries, so they want me to get at a lower weight before exercising. Very long story.)

So here are my questions/concerns. Nearly everything I've seen on here says that no matter what, a very low calorie diet for any amount of time is damaging, and that even now it's too late for my body, and I'm damaged. Or that's what I feel like the message is. So my question is, is this true, and I've permanently destroyed my metabolism? I feel better than I've felt in a long time. However, I'm scared that I could be doing something irreversible. I have a doctor and dieticians who have been checking in every two weeks. But is VLCD seriously bad? I see my doctor tomorrow, and I've addressed these concerns before, but they told me since it was temporary, I would be fine. Has anyone done this before? Thank you for any help or input.
