I started doing yoga a few months before the pandemic, and then took a yearlong break while all the gyms were closed. I was always amazed by the yogis who could get into full binds. It felt like I was such a long way away from being able to bind (and forget about handstands) and I blamed it on my lack of flexibility.
I just started going to the gym again (thanks vaxx!) and have been going to yoga once or twice a week for a few weeks. The instructor last night suggested that we go into a bind during class, and I felt pretty stable so I wanted to see how close I could get, and MY FINGERS TOUCHED. I realized that, while I still have work to do on my flexibility, the extra chub I had been carrying around for so long was the main reason I'd not been able to bind before. I had been physically getting in my own way!
Not only yoga, but all of the exercise I've been doing lately (weights, jogging, HIIT) have been easier and more enjoyable, and I've been able to up the frequency and intensity. I've lost 23 lbs since February (the rest was slowly prior to that) doing mostly plant-based CICO and walking, which translates to nearly 4" off of my waist and hips. Can't wait to see where I go from here!
Tl;dr: Exercise is so much easier after you've lost some weight. If you don't like exercising when you're big, give it another shot when you get some chub out of the way.
