How do people "feel" good after exercising?

I'm a big guy, and have been my entire life. I've never felt the need to go workout. If I can't do something, I simply force myself to do it until I can. I read all the time about people feeling great after a run or after lifting or anything. I have worked out. I own a treadmill and go running sometimes, and I feel terrible after. I don't feel stronger, I dont have more energy, I just feel terrible. Is it just because I don't do it often enough or what is it? I go for hours at work running around doing things, and I end the day tired as expected. 40 minutes on the treadmill and my legs are stiff, my heart is going and I feel just awful. Is that supposed to feel good? Edit: spelling
