I have been struggling with stress eating recently, but I have been doing my best to keep to my calorie plan. Last night was rough for me, and I ended up over-snacking and getting several servings of toast, greek yogurt and honey while I mindlessly scrolled reddit. I felt awful about it and was sure I had ruined my whole day. I went to sleep upset about my lack of willpower.
This morning, I entered the calorie info for my extra snacks, expecting to go way over my calories. To my surprise, I was only over by 75 calories! I took a minute to think about how this could be possible. The bread is low calorie. The greek yogurt is unsweetened, and I used a carefully small amount of honey with each serving. This is a long way from my previous habits of snacking on sweetened potato bread toast with lots of butter, and sweetened ‘yo-crunch’ yogurt with the oreos in it.
It’s true, my willpower sucks when it comes to stress snacks. Fortunately, my willpower seems to be fine at the grocery store! As I work to control snacking, it’s better that I have low calorie (and perfectly delicious) food lying around instead of calorie dense junk food.
I’ve also been eating smaller portioned meals, and I have been feeling full much quicker than I used to be. This is mostly what allowed for my snacking calories yesterday, and I’m grateful for it. It seems that I have gotten used to the fact that I will keep eating after dinner and just know that I should leave room for it now, instead of trying to cut my food off at dinner time.
Things are still up and down for me and I have a long way to go on my relationship with food and exercise, but at least I’m picking up healthier habits as I go along.
Thanks to this sub and r/1500isplenty for helping me stay on track!
Disclaimer: I probably over/underestimated my consumption of yogurt last night due to not using my scale, but I eat it frequently enough that I believe I can reliably eye-ball how much I had. I’m ok with that. If my count is a little bit off it’s not the end of the world for me.
