Today I decided to go for a run. Now when I say that I know that I'm going to be alternating running and walking. Even when I was in great shape I was never good at running...had a couple points in my life I was able to run 2 miles without stopping to walk but even then I was doing it at a slow pace about 15 minutes per mile.
in more recent years I've gained weight and haven't focused as much on running as I have other workouts. generally when I go for a run I alternate 1/4 Mile of running with 1/4 Mile of walking. I've only done a couple of these type of workouts in the last few months though.
Today I decided to do a 5K... Since I'm planning to sign up for at least one a month this year. My first one is scheduled for next weekend so I figured I'd see where I was at.
I tried out a new trail and it seems it was under construction and a lot of the trail was quite muddy... So those factors caused me to walk more than I might have planned (was worried about slipping on mud, needed to "off road" a bit to avoid muddy patches, etc). but even still I found that the running portions were much more difficult than I expected. Whereas in the past I was always able to run for at least a quarter mile at a time, today's workout was such that I needed to stop early during the quarter mile intervals. And some of them I just skipped altogether.
All in all, I did the 5k in just under an hour. I was hoping for 45-50 minutes
It's not where I want to be but I'm not mad. It just shows me how far I have to go...and I'm excited to get there
So, don't be ashamed. Don't beat yourself up if others are faster or go longer distances. It truly is only about your journey and your only competition is yourself.
