Calorie deficits, plateaus, and losing fat vs. muscle

Hi everyone!

I’m hoping you guys can help shed some light here. I will soon embark on my weight loss journey and I’m trying to make sure I do it right.

I’ve seen many people on here post success stories of their dramatic weight loss, and many people mention that they’ve used an aggressive calorie deficit to achieve it. But the articles I read online say too much of a deficit will cause a plateau in weight loss. How can I prevent a weight loss plateau when eating in big deficit?

Further, how can I ensure that the weight I’m losing is fat and not muscle? Or at least minimize muscle loss? Is it just a matter of protein consumption and weight training?
