Question: Weight training/building muscle while in a caloric deficit?

Ok I have some confusion surrounding muscle building and weight lifting while dieting. Recently I have seen some talk on this sub about how it is difficult/maybe impossible to build muscle while eating a caloric deficit, as your body needs a surplus to put on muscle mass. This makes sense.

But then I’m left wondering, is there any point to lifting weights while dieting? If your body can’t make much new muscle without surplus calories, what’s the point? Does it still burn fat? My understanding was that weight training burned fat by increasing your lean muscle mass.

Any clarification or explanations would be appreciated.
