Tonight I’m feeling pretty good about myself. I’ve never posted on here but thought I could share a bit of my story and my progress. I don’t post anything on my Facebook for fear of humiliation, not sure why I really care, but I’ll start here since nobody knows me.
First of all, I’m a 29 year old male 5’9” and I’ve never really cared what I ate or how I looked. I played sports in high school and was in good shape weighing in at 200 pounds in 2011. I was built fairly well so I didn’t look overweight or anything. I graduated and played semi pro football for a few years. Graduated college, got married, got a new job, then I had my first daughter. My wife and I were expecting another but unfortunately had a miscarriage. I got lazy, stressed, depressed and had problems with OCD. I got addicted to eating sugary foods and drank a lot of pop. We had another healthy baby girl with no problems but I already gained a bunch of weight.
In October of 2018 I lost my dad. He was almost 400 pounds, had multiple strokes over the years, and had stage 4 renal failure. They were putting in ports for kidney dialysis and were supposed to keep him in the hospital overnight but for some reason they sent him home. He climbed the stairs in his apartment and passed out and was unresponsive. His friend called the ems and it took them almost 10 minutes to get there. They restarted his heart and took him to the hospital. He was in ICU for a week before they decided he was basically brain dead and we had to take him off life support.
I weighed 275 pounds when he died and I realized how disgusted I was with myself. I got a gym membership at the beginning of 2019. Started eating better and ran 3-5 miles on the elliptical most week days after work. In august 2019, I was down to 245 and started getting pains in my left side. It felt like somebody was shoving a knife thru my ribs. I thought it was organ problems and saw several doctors and they weren’t sure what was going on. Finally got multiple MRI’s and found out I had a bulging disc in my lumbar and 2 bulging discs in my thoracic vertebrae. The back pain and sciatic pain was so bad I had to take time off work and had to go to physical therapy for 3 months. I wasn’t able to work out from august 2019 until October 12th 2020. I was back up to 258 pounds and looked bigger than when I was 275. Since then, I’ve run 3-7 miles on the elliptical every week day and started eating smaller portions and cut WAY back on junk food. I weighed in at 241.5 pounds today after running 7 miles in 45 minutes on the elliptical. I can see my cheeks aren’t as fat, my love handles are getting smaller, I have to tighten up my belt more, and overall, I just feel better. My back still gets tight but I don’t get the feeling like a knife is being shoved between my ribs. I bought a tens unit on Amazon and I use it as needed. My family and I are supposed to go to the beach in April so I’m really hoping to be down around 225 around then. I’m hoping to use the elliptical until then and maybe start doing some real running and lifting weights and see how my back feels.
Sorry to bore you with my story and I appreciate anybody who took the time to read it.
