Fit People Eat Less (SHOCKING NEWS!)

FYI--a little bit about me, about three years ago, I lost 105 pounds. Over the course of the past three years, I gained back fifty five pounds of it. While I'm relieved I didn't lose control completely, it was demoralizing and upsetting and shook my entire self worth to its core. I am proud to say that since the beginning of September, I have lost sixteen pounds (!!!) How did I do it? By starting in small, manageable ways, tracking my calories on cheat days (very important!!!), and creating some good momentum. Food feels less emotionally charged to me than it ever has before. I have learned that I can't just "let myself get off track" because for me, I spiral totally out of control--and one time is all it takes to ruin my mental focus. I have learned this about myself, and now, I plan accordingly around my own strengths and weaknesses.

But! To the topic of the post. As an overweight person, I am pretty much obsessed with watching what others eat. I do so compulsively with a sense of seeking permission. If I see a thin person grab two donuts, I give myself permission to have two. If I see a bunch of my students (I'm a teacher) munching on Cheezits, I grab a handful (or ten). Sometimes I will even lock in on one svelte person in the room and think "If they grab another piece of pizza, then I can too." I have lots of things that I do like this--I call them "Fun Games and Puzzles for Overweight People" (I also check to see if I'm the fattest person in the room, try to guess the weight of others, etc).

So last week, I was working with two of my students at a Saturday rehearsal (theater teacher). They are both 16-17 and are very strong, fit young men. As we finished, one walked away and said "Man, I better get some dinner, I haven't eaten today." The other chimed in, "oh, me neither." It was about 5:30 PM. I was floored. One of these guys had been playing basketball basically the entire day, and the other had worked a six hour shift (at a RESTAURANT!) "Really? You haven't eaten anything???" I repeated. "Nope," one replied. "I mean, I was hungry after basketball in the morning so we went to the mall to eat, but then I thought I'd be hungrier after open gym, so I just decided to wait. It's gonna taste really good now though."

Both were unbothered. Neither had commented to me earlier in the rehearsal that they were hungry or hadn't eaten.

Now, obviously I'm not CONDONING these kind of eating habits, but I'm just saying--I bet they both went home and stuffed their faces. They probably ate 2000+ calories in an hour. And if I had seen them wolfing that food down, I probably would have though "oh, I can too!" ... except I had already eaten two meals at that point.

Then, I remembered when I was with my students all day at a choir event a few weekends ago. The students ate gummy worms and donuts and cheezits all day, but for lunch, they picked at nachos and one ate half a hot dog. Then, they ate ice cream at night. That was IT. I'd be shocked if any of them consumed over 1500 calories.

Old me would have seen them devouring gummy worms and would have eaten an entire bag, and then a giant lunch to follow. NOT TO MENTION that these young people are ABLE to consume a lot of calories being that they are young and active.

So basically, I've learned don't judge a person by their meal. You don't know the whole story.
