is it possible to lose weight when working out but not really adjusting diet?

i get that this question probably gets asked all the time, but i was wondering specifically about the way i eat in particular.

i'm 5'7 20F, i'm not sure how much i weigh but i'm thin (it might be helpful to add i'm between a us dress size 2 and 4??? if that helps at all??). i've been working out a lot because i want to tone up my arms and stomach and lose maybe a few pounds. i don't eat a lot - i'd say i eat about 1,000 calories a day, give or take 300 each way - i don't really count so this is a rough estimation. i'm just not a very hungry person. but i don't eat that well. i don't eat badly, i eat a lot of vegetables and fruit and fish, but i do eat carbs pretty regularly and i snack on candy and chips. i was just wondering, if i wanted to get in better shape, if a stricter diet was necessary or if all it takes is persistence with exercise. thanks !
