I stopped eating fast food about two months ago. I'm living a better life because of it.

About two months ago, on April 11th, I decided that I was going to stop eating fast food for two months. I shared this pact with my sister to help hold me accountable, and I'm happy to say that almost two months later, I'm close to successfully achieving my goal. I simply came to a point where I realized that I was eating way too much fast food and also spending an unnecessary amount of money on it. It was just getting out of hand. One of my biggest issues was buying large iced coffees (I love coffee) VERY frequently from Dunkin' Donuts. Weirdly enough, going to buy the coffees almost became an experience for me. I truly enjoyed my Dunkin' Donuts coffee runs. It was also not uncommon for me to get a couple of donuts with my iced coffee or buy a breakfast sandwich. I also love Del Taco (and would get food from there very often), Cane's, McDonald's McGriddles, etc. In general, I was probably purchasing some form of fast food 4 or 5 times a week. Anyways, I've enumerated below what I've learned from this lil pact.

Benefits:

  • I feel greater control. Because I decided that fast food is simply out of the question, I no longer agonize over whether or not I should go to Cane's, Del Taco, Popeyes, Dunkin' Donuts, etc. to go buy food that I know I shouldn't be eating. Fast food isn't an option, so I can just avoid the mental struggle. I don't feel the guilt that I sometimes felt before nor do I feel like a failure because I went and bought what I told myself I wouldn't.
  • I'm not spending as much money. Maybe it was the case in the early 2000s, but fast food (at least in my experience) is really not cheap. I can get much more out of what I spend money on at the grocery store.
  • This experience has forced me to develop greater discipline. So many of us buy fast food out of convenience and because we are too lazy to prepare our own food (myself included, not judging). Following through with this pact forced me to break the habit of just defaulting to fast food whenever I felt like it.
  • I no longer rely on fast food to feel good nor do I allow it to create an experience for me (e.g., the Dunkin' Donuts iced coffees example above).
  • Eliminating fast food from my life has made it easier to work towards overcoming my issues with overeating.
  • This pact has allowed me to create a lifestyle change. I don't actually plan on only doing this for two months. Experiencing the benefits of this pact have made me NOT want to go back to eating fast food. Sure, I might eat fast food here and there after the pact is over if I find myself in a situation where there are no other options, but I am for the most part not going to be eating it (especially because I am in the process of losing weight and am trying to eat healthier). Fast food can also be very addictive.

Just wanted to share for those who are trying to overcome a fast food addiction or who just eat too much fast food and are trying to break bad habits.
