Freshman minus 20!

Just finished my freshman yeah of college!

I stayed at home for the first semester and then went to res for the second. I definitely took advantage of the meal plan for the first month and a half but then started to pay attention to how I felt after eating only fried foods on the daily.

After going home for reading week and seeing that I hadn’t gained or lost any weight after being at school for a bit, I remembered why I was so excited to leave and decided to do something about my health and fitness.

When I got back from my break, I started to only eat foods that made me feel good and satisfied.

I almost immediately started to feel better when I fixed my mindset towards food. Especially when I realized that I’m 18 and for the rest of my life I get to eat whatever I want. The store will always be a short walk away and if I don’t actually want a certain food, I’ll have many other chances to eat it.

I also have become obsessed with more plates more dates and Greg doucette. Been watching will tennyson for a bit but Greg really changed my life by telling me the cold hard facts about weight loss and nutrition. (Mostly eating until I’m full and eating low calorie foods is what I got from him, also many recipes)

I’ve always been an athlete so I enjoy working out but now I can really appreciate physique building which is something that interests me now.

I’m only 2 months in and this is the easiest it’s ever been for me.

Thank you all for the encouragement and I hope to be in better shape and stronger before track season training starts next semester!

Still have quite a bit of work left to do but I’m excited for the journey.

Day 1, again.

38M, 406+lbs, 6’

Less than 14 months until I hit the big 40, and wondering if I can shed 15 stone in that time. Maybe, maybe not, but in attempting it I’ll be healthier anyway.

Ordered a Concept2 RowErg indoor rower today, as rowing is about the only kind of exercise I actually enjoy. I figure with plenty of use (I get virtual no movement currently) and some modifications to the diet this may be a feasible journey.

Also ordered a soft tape measure so that I can start keeping track of waist circumference.

My first major goal/milestone is getting back inside the threshold of my digital scale. Nothing has been more disappointing to me than crossing to the “too heavy” side of that range. Thankfully, that should only be 10-15lbs.

Row row row the fat Gently off the scale Steadily steadily steadily steadily Is the best way not to fail.

Day 1? Starting your weight loss journey on Saturday, 01 May 2021? Start here!

Today is your Day 1?

Welcome to r/Loseit!

So you aren’t sure of how to start? Don’t worry! “How do I get started?” is our most asked question. r/Loseit has helped our users lose over 1,000,000 recorded pounds and these are the steps that we’ve found most useful for getting started.

Why you’re overweight

Our bodies are amazing (yes, yours too!). In order to survive before supermarkets, we had to be able to store energy to get us through lean times, we store this energy as adipose fat tissue. If you put more energy into your body than it needs, it stores it, for (potential) later use. When you put in less than it needs, it uses the stored energy. The more energy you have stored, the more overweight you are. The trick is to get your body to use the stored energy, which can only be done if you give it less energy than it needs, consistently.

Before You Start

The very first step is calculating your calorie needs. You can do that HERE. This will give you an approximation of your calorie needs for the day. The next step is to figure how quickly you want to lose the fat. One pound of fat is equal to 3500 calories. So to lose 1 pound of fat per week you will need to consume 500 calories less than your TDEE (daily calorie needs from the link above). 750 calories less will result in 1.5 pounds and 1000 calories is an aggressive 2 pounds per week.

Tracking

Here is where it begins to resemble work. The most efficient way to lose the weight you desire is to track your calorie intake. This has gotten much simpler over the years and today it can be done right from your smartphone or computer. r/loseit recommends an app like MyFitnessPal, Loseit! (unaffiliated), or Cronometer. Create an account and be honest with it about your current stats, activities, and goals. This is your tracker and no one else needs to see it so don’t cheat the numbers. You’ll find large user created databases that make logging and tracking your food and drinks easy with just the tap of the screen or the push of a button. We also highly recommend the use of a digital kitchen scale for accuracy. Knowing how much of what you're eating is more important than what you're eating. Why? This may explain it.

Creating Your Deficit

How do you create a deficit? This is up to you. r/loseit has a few recommendations but ultimately that decision is yours. There is no perfect diet for everyone. There is a perfect diet for you and you can create it. You can eat less of exactly what you eat now. If you like pizza you can have pizza. Have 2 slices instead of 4. You can try lower calorie replacements for calorie dense foods. Some of the communities favorites are cauliflower rice, zucchini noodles, spaghetti squash in place of their more calorie rich cousins. If it appeals to you an entire dietary change like Keto, Paleo, Vegetarian.

The most important thing to remember is that this selection of foods works for you. Sustainability is the key to long term weight management success. If you hate what you’re eating you won’t stick to it.

Exercise

Is NOT mandatory. You can lose fat and create a deficit through diet alone. There is no requirement of exercise to lose weight.

It has it’s own benefits though. You will burn extra calories. Exercise is shown to be beneficial to mental health and creates an endorphin rush as well. It makes people feel *awesome* and has been linked to higher rates of long term success when physical activity is included in lifestyle changes.

Crawl, Walk, Run

It can seem like one needs to make a 180 degree course correction to find success. That isn’t necessarily true. Many of our users find that creating small initial changes that build a foundation allows them to progress forward in even, sustained, increments.

Acceptance

You will struggle. We have all struggled. This is natural. There is no tip or trick to get through this though. We encourage you to recognize why you are struggling and forgive yourself for whatever reason that may be. If you overindulged at your last meal that is ok. You can resolve to make the next meal better.

Do not let the pursuit of perfect get in the way of progress. We don’t need perfect. We just want better.

Now you’re ready to do this. Here are more details, that may help you refine your plan.

I am struggling with the whole "eat what you want because food is fuel and not the enemy" but knowing that if I take that approach to living and eating the way that I want to - I will gain all the weight back that I have now lost two times over.

TW: eating disorder talk.

For reference - I'm 22F and went from 300lbs to 223lbs in 20 months. I did this through CICO and getting active. This has been my second journey with major weight loss.

Lately, I've been seeing lots of posts and hearing about body positivity, anti-diet culture and food freedom. How no food is bad for you, and that you can eat whatever you want. Basically an F-you to diet culture. (I am not at all saying that diet culture is good or healthy for every person - I'm just saying that this has gotten me thinking.)

As someone who has struggled with their weight, body image and binge eating disorder for essentially my whole life, I found this all to be very interesting just to see things from another perspective. I'm all for not punishing myself for eating certain foods, or exercising as a form of punishment (instead, I do it out of self-love because it makes me feel great!) But here's is what it comes down to for me: I am struggling with grasping the whole "eat what you want because food is fuel and not the enemy" but knowing that if I take that approach to living and eating the way that I want to - I will gain all the weight back that I have now lost two times over.

I know that I want to be healthy in spirit, mind and body and have some form a grasp on food freedom - but I also feel like I am in such a hole at times because I don't understand what a healthy relationship with food looks like, but I do not feel like I can track calories my entire life or let the numbers of calories consume my brain. I know I am not yet at a place where I am done losing weight yet, either.

I don't know if I am looking for advise or just ranting - but thank you for reading this far if you have. I don't think I am the only person in this boat - but man, is it ever a tough boat to be in sometimes.

Fallen off this past month

21F SW:153 LW:136 CW: 140

Hi!! I’ve worked really hard the past few months to lose weight and was on a really good streak. Worked out 3-4 times a week and was really good about what I was eating and not snacking.

Stress with graduation has picked up and I find myself stress eating and out of control. Nothing crazy but it definitely is not what I want and I know it will lead to more weight gain.

Any tips to get back on track? I find myself eating well all day at work then snacking late at night when I’m stressed with homework. I feel bloated all the time! I also have had less time/energy for the gym. I’m hoping after graduation I will be able to go back to my normal gym schedule. How do I stop the cravings!!?

Tomorrow is a new day: going to hit the gym and try to get back on track.

Weight loss making hair fall out

So this year I wanted to dedicate myself to being healthy and getting back in shape after having my kids. I have lost 39 pounds since the start of this year and went from a size 18 to a size 12. I am so happy! But this last month I noticed I am losing so much hair in the shower and when I brush it, it’s stressing me out (which doesn’t help) and I’m worried about the amount I’m losing. I’ve done some research that says this is common when you lose a lot of weight, but I’m curious if anyone’s gone through this themselves? How long did it seem to last and did anything help it? I’m already eating all the foods that are recommended to help hair growth and I’m taking a hair skin and nails multivitamin too. I’ve always had thin hair anyway so I feel like I just can’t afford to lose as much as I am. In the shower it’s like chunks come out.

Appreciate any feedback, thanks 😄

Restarting my weight loss journey and could use some advice!

Hello!

I’ve decided to restart my weight loss journey- before COVID I already was unhappy with my weight and then COVID happened and I gained another 20lbs 😞. I was recommended the app Cronometer along with my Apple Watch. Has anyone used this app before and did you have any success? I’m really looking for something that is doable. I have an exercise bike and I’ve started working out again- I just want to find an app that is good for calorie counting that will sync with my watch- so if anyone has any suggestions or apps that worked please let me know!

I am female, 5’5, 29, and weigh 230lbs by the way.

how to lose without counting?

this is kind of an odd question for me to ask because i've actually lost 35lbs without counting calories. the catch is that since losing that 35lbs, i've been gaining and losing the same 10lbs a few times from september --> now. that's because anytime i've been losing without counting, i unintentionally undereat and/or over exercise and end up bouncing back and over eating for a while. it's extremely frustrating because i have 15lbs to lose until i get to my goal but i've been caught in this cycle for months now. does anyone have any advice?

the problem is that there are a few factors i can't control for example:

-i am currently home for the summer from college and my mom makes dinner so idk the calorie count of that

i just want to make sure i'm getting enough so i can finally break this plateau and binge cycle. i've also tried eating the same stuff everyday (pre-counted) but i crashed pretty quickly doing that. again, i am frustrated! any help is greatly appreciated thanks :)

The pandemic made me gain belly fat

I was always lucky to be tall and thin and never really had to think of losing weight. Now after over a year of home office, not doing sports, eating cheese as a snack, making my own bread and eating all of it, I lost a lot of muscles and gained belly fat. Weight gain from 77kg to 82kg (approx. 170 pounds in freedom scales).

I look silly around the waist wearing my button ups that have gotten tight and my goal is to lose weight as soon as possible.

I started tracking my calories today but figured that I actually have no idea how to do it.

Should I eat the same things but less? Should I not eat any bread anymore? Cut fats or cut carbs?

I do sports regularly, so I don't need to put myself on a schedule for that. I think what I need to change is my eating habit.

How do tdee calculators and exercise work together? Bonus frozen food question.

I'm 29 5'8 and I workout 5-6 days a week and run 10km a week too.

I started at 95ish in January, now am hovering above 78kg atm and I want to reach an ideal weight of 68kg.

I have a maintenance calories level of around 2800 cal. Most days I try to stay at 2300 obviously some days are better than others but I'm good with my food and exercise.

I want to know, do tdee calculators take our exercise into account i.e it generalises our activity levels and averages out our daily requirement or if I go for a run today i can eat back an extra 200 calories?

It may be a silly question but it's been bugging me.

Bonus:

I eat a lot of frozen fish these days. Its cheap, I cook it well and it's reasonably high protein but low calories.

My issue is that when I weigh it for my calculations, im aware that frozen it weighs a lot more than defrosted. That messes with my daily totals and makes me a bit worried.

Is there a calculation or figure I can use to mitigate this issue?

Low calorie dense foods to make tasty meals? Im bored of chicken rice and veggies

Im trying to lose roughly 5 percent body fat. Currently on a 500 cal deficit.

Im female, 5'10, 25 years old, weigh 80kg and I strength train x4 a week. Im on 30% carb 40% protein and 30% fat.

I find i can't have some of the healthy foods I enjoy because they are so calorie dense: avocado, fatty fish, full fat milk

So my question is, what are some foods I can add into my diet that I can make nice meals out of but aren't so calorie dense? Bonus points if you can provide an example of how you use the ingredient in a meal. Bonus bonus points if they prioritise protein intake.

Im allergic to eggs so can't have those

Postpartum weight loss

I'm 11 weeks PP and the heaviest I've ever been. I'm 5'5 and 250 lbs. I am 30lbs heavier than before pregnancy and I honestly didn't think I would gain so much.

My calves hurt when I walk now which they didn't before. I'm worried it's my arteries. I used to love walking and now I just find it tiring and painful. I also have PCOS and weight loss has always been a struggle for me.

I lost just over a stone before I got pregnant but stalled just before. I can never seem to get past about 16lbs without stalling and plateauing - and then I stop as I have no idea what to do to push past it.

I used to do lots of weight lifting and enjoyed it but now I'm back to worse than before I started lifting and losing weight and the goal seems so far away it makes me cry.

Any ideas for losing weight PP? Lack of sleep and raging hormones adds a whole new dimension to weight loss. Feeling deflated and like I will never be healthy again :(

Stuck at the same weight

I started eating healthy in January and managed to lose a stone in around 3.5 months. In the last month however I have put on 0.5lb and maintained that every week since, despite exercising more than i have in years and not changing my eating habits. Does anyone know why? Could it be because i'm exercising and thats building muscle? I cant eat any less calories than I am or it would be unhealthy. Is there a certain thing i should cut out of my diet such as carbs or fat? I'm so close to my GW its annoying me that I'm getting fitter and my mindset has changed completely but the numbers just wont budge!

Feeling lost.

Please ignore this post if you don't feel like being annoyed.

Yesterday I felt like I had a mental breakthrough in other areas of my life (letting go, forgiving, etc) today I am battling the inability to sleep because I realized that I will be 26 this year and as far as I can remember I have never lived a single day where I didn't think about calories, how much food I have to be eating to be gaining weight, etc.

I also began wondering at what point I would have to let go of the idea of having children if I don't get my shit together in the next few years.

I'm curious to know what was your breaking point? What made you truly quit cold turkey and focus on your health for weight loss? I feel like a lot of us ignore some of the pains and twangs that come with being heavier, and even my chest hurting and general body aches havent jarred me in the way I wish it would have. I have also dealt with some unaliving issues for a really long time that I have begun to stray from as a coping mechanism.

So back to the question: What was your breaking point? When was enough enough?

I lost almost 50 pounds in 3 months!

A little back story, last year after the pandemic hit and we went into lock down i lost my job like most people and decided to focus on finishing university instead of working. Around May 2020 i weighed at 209 pounds and maintained that weight until August.

Because my classes where all online my routine was wake up, attend some classes and then spend the rest of the day home doing virtually nothing (no pun intended). It got to a point where i decided to try smoking weed. After a couple weeks i was hooked, i started a bad routine where i would wake up do the bare minimum during the day then convince myself i've done enough to deserve weed and ordering ubereats.

There were times where i would smoke everyday for two weeks straight then order ubereats and if i was out hanging with friends the only thing i would think about was going back home and doing it. Around the end of September i was weighing 242 pounds which was the biggest i have ever been in my life. The turning point came when i was at our local butcher and saw people i hadn't seen since the lockdown started who commented on my weight gain which made me feel like absolute shit. That same day i decided my life will change, i began training at 5am, 5-6 days a week doing 1 hour and 45 minutes of cardio then weights for 1 hour and 15 minutes.

As i said the first day i started training which was September 25th i weighed 242 pounds and by Christmas day i was down to 198 pounds. Since then i have been complemented on my weight loss journey which has been great. Between January and now i've just been maintaining my weight and i can happily say as of today i weigh 194 pounds and want to lose even more! I've now set another goal to lose another 7 pounds then i will reach my all time goal!

I’m going to college next year and I’d like to shed some weight.

I’m an 18 y/o male, 6’5 and 220lbs. I have noticed over quarantine that I’ve begun to develop a bit of a belly and my face has become a little more chubby. I used to be very active, playing sports nearly every day, but since I’ve finished high school and taken a year off to work I’ve noticed I’ve had less of a chance to be active (I work rotating shifts at a factory). I’m just coming here to ask what would be some good activities I could do while in lockdown to help me become more active? I’ve tried running but I have bad knees and feet so it usually causes me some pain that I’d rather not deal with. Should I also begin a diet, or cut calories?

Can I change my life in a year?

F38, HW: 282, CW: 268, GW: 176 (and then I will reassess), H: 5'6"

Apologies in advance for the rant!!!

I re-installed a fitness app on my phone yesterday as I decided it was finally time to get serious (again) about losing weight and getting healthy. For some reason I had got it in my head that I had lost some weight in the last year, but just not nearly enough...

Wrong!

My weight this time last year, was pretty much exactly what it is now. In the last year I have gained and then lost around 14lb giving me a false sense of achievement. I have wasted yet another year!

I am an anaesthetic technician and work in a busy operating theatre. Everyday I see patients who require surgery because the lifestyle they lead has caught up to them, or, I see patients who require emergency surgery for an injury or women who require caesarean sections etc that require a much more specialist anaesthetic and surgical approach because of their co-morbidities.

I've lost count of how many limbs I have seen amputated because of uncontrolled diabetes or peripheral vascular disease.

Did you know that when you are obese and require a caesarean section to deliver your baby, there is a special sticky dressing that is used to pull all of your fat up and and out of the way? And even then, it's still a much more technically difficult and dangerous surgery.

Anaesthetising and intubating obese patients is much more difficult and dangerous than the average sized person. Obese people are likely to drop their oxygen levels much more and much faster and their airways are more likely to collapse leaving them at risk of an hypoxic brain injury.

And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

After taking some time to reflect and really get honest with myself, I realised I am no better than many of my patients; in fact I am probably much worse off than most of them as despite having all of this knowledge I have continued to eat poorly and live a sedentary lifestyle... :(

Anyway, I am so glad I have found this group. I have been browsing through and there are many inspiring messages.

This is an accountability post of sorts for myself. Starting from the 1st May I am going to get real about my health by:

- eating low carb, healthy fat
- alternate day fasting
- walking at least 10,000 steps a day
- resistance training at the gym at least 3 times a week

As well as improving my overall health, I hope to be able to get healthy enough to have a successful IVF round next year.

If you have read this far, thank you for listening to me rant! I hope I haven't offended anyone. I just wanted to give myself a big reality check.

I look forward to watching everyone's weightloss journeys. And I hope that in a years time I will be posting a success story of my own!

I have no idea what I’m doing

Hello all!

I’m a 31 year old male and I’m severely overweight. I’ve already started working out with Insanity (wk2) and my eating has been better than it has been in the last 6 years. The area I’m extremely overwhelmed in is calorie counting. My sister tells me that I’m not eating enough. An example of what I eat daily is:” as follows:

Breakfast(Never before 10:30 am): High Protein Shake Lunch: High Protein Shake Dinner: Cooked meal l such as chicken, turkey, or fish with vegetables on the side. I don’t eat past 6pm

The protein shake I drink is 28g of protein with 2g Net Carbs

I’ve been doing a keto diet for the past 3 weeks and I’m not entirely sure I’m doing it right. If anyone can help me with these questions below I would be very grateful. I put my stats and goals down below so that you guys can have a good visual of where I am and where I want to be.

How many calories should I be consuming on a daily basis?

Is 20g of carbs the typical ceiling in keto?

How many grams of protein and fat should I consume on this type of diet?

Stats Height: 6’0” Current Weight: 325

Goal Weight: 205

I have put on 55 pounds in just over a year

24yo female, 5'2, I went from 130 to 185. It has been like I have been in this dreamlike state, just wandering around, not noticing the chaos and the bad habits I was creating. Somewhere along the line, fruit for breakfast became pancakes, bacon, doughnuts. Lunch and dinners used to be light, but are now like calorie bombs loaded with fat and salt. I don't know what caused this downfall for lack of a better term. I used to jog in the morning, but, somewhere along the line, jogging was traded in for planting myself on the couch, and not leaving unless it was for soda, snacks, or a meal. It was like my life was just bed to couch, couch to bed. I'm sure everyone is feeling like they need to be on eggshells about this issue, because no friend, or family member, nor my boyfriend has said a thing.

How do I ease myself back into a healthy lifestyle or am I too late?

NSV Is that a Tricep in my Chicken Wing?

I'm pretty damn sure I got a glimpse of my triceps.

Fact, I have chicken wings and not arms. When I set my original goal I didn't think my belly would still over hang my belly button, or that I'd still have big, floppy triceps. To say I was not amused is an understatement. I should have taken before photos, then I could see they have shrunk, coulda, shoulda, woulda.

Because I was frustrated, I made the decision to maintain, work on muscle tone, etc. Even if it's hidden by flab, I could work on toning and growing those muscles I couldn't see. I've been back to work to lose whatever it is I need to get rid of this stomach and improve these arms for a week.

Thanks to arthritis floor exercises are just a problem for me so I stick to standing workouts. I did a core with dumbbells workout today and as I kept my arms raised, cursing myself for choosing 5lb weights, arms day was yesterday, I saw what I'm damn sure were my triceps at work while my chicken wings were jingling.

Hello girls, nice to finally meet you. I hope to see more of you soon.

I hope what anyone can take from this is if your goal doesn't bring you what you hoped, reset, refresh and renew the fight.

Can eating too few calories stunt weight loss?

I started CICO on April 9th, eating around 1200cal/day (this number is based off of my TDEE- I’m not starving myself). I had started sometime last year but fell off the wagon and ended up 30lbs heavier than I started. Anyway, I decided to try again a few weeks ago and upon looking through my entries on MFP I noticed I was logging around 8-900 calories a day for 4 out of the 7 days this past week, which I believe is accurate because I was so busy that I hadn’t even noticed how little I ate and also wasn’t hungry. I also cycle around 10 miles/day on a stationary bike and don’t log exercise so my calorie count was even less. I actually went up a pound and have been stagnant since then and am wondering could that have caused this stop? I know there are ups and downs in weight loss so I’m not concerned about that- I’m just wondering whether eating too little for a few days here and there can trigger your body to hold on to what it has or whether it takes an extended period of malnourishment for that to happen?

I feel like I'm not making any progress, and it's really discouraging

i was one of many who put on weight during covid (around 20lbs), i was already around 10 above the healthy weight for my height and age (i'm 5'2). so nothing extreme in terms of weight loss, but i'm not really seeing much progress.

since the new year, i've been making changes to my lifestyle. i got a job that keeps me on my feet, went back to school in person, a gym membership, and even a personal trainer. so i've been busy and a lot more active than i was for a majority of 2020. i go to the gym 5 days a week, 1 time is with the trainer. i also have an apple watch to keep track of my calories and exercise minutes. i've been more mindful of eating and calories, but not perfect. more recently i've been focusing on getting enough protein.

i really do want to lose weight, i want my old body back and to feel comfortable with myself again. as a teenage girl, gaining weight is so diminishing to my self esteem, and i just want to feel good about myself again.

but i'm not really seeing much change. i know weight loss takes a while, but going from minimal exercise to the gym and weight training 5x a week, i expected more of a change.

my measurements have gone down, but only by 1/2- 1 inch since january. some of my clothes fit a little better, but not as well as they used to. my weight has gone down a few pounds, but it's just discouraging. with the trainer, i found out my body fat percentage has gone down but weight stayed the same, meaning i lost fat and gained muscle.

but still, i'm not seeing much of a change, and i feel like i'm doing something wrong. does anyone have advice for this? is there something i could be doing differently? i'm going to try to get my step count up and walk more, i've heard that just walking a lot can help too.

NSV: I’ve eaten a serving of veggies with every meal this week!

I have always hated most vegetables. I’m a super-taster so I’ve always hated anything really sour, really sweet, or really bitter. That means coffee, tea, veggies, and even most chocolate grosses me out. Lettuce and baby spinach seemed to be the only thing I ever liked, so that was what I leaned heavily on for the first few weeks until I got really bored.

I’ve been trying really hard to incorporate some vegetables in my diet using different cooking methods. I have yet to find one I enjoy, but I’ve been suffering through it in hopes of learning to like them. After over 2 months, I’m not sure if that will ever change, but I’m eating them and giving it my best shot. The air fryer has helped make them bearable and worst case scenario, I can always blend them up into a smoothie or turn them into a veggie sauce if I never learn to actually enjoy them.

I know this is a really lame NSV for a lot of people, but eating a cup of brussel sprouts with my dinner tonight was such a mindf*ck for me! 🥦

[Century Club] April 29, 2021 - Have you lost or need to lose 100 lbs or more? Here’s a thread just for you!

I have often welcomed those who have lost 100+ lbs (~ 50 kg , ~7 stone) to “the club” and joked that club meetings were on Thursdays. I recently suggested that we try out having a regular weekly thread to talk about issues that are particular to those who have lost 100+ lbs, those who are well on their way and those who are just at the beginning of a journey this big.

Welcome back to the Century Club! Each week I will provide a topic of the day that has been on my mind or inspired by previous posts. However you are free to talk about any topics you think might be relevant to current and prospective club members.

Previous Topics: Relationships - Loose Skin Redux - Multiple Centuries - April Fools! - What didn't work? - Milestones - Seasonal changes - Is it worth it? - Surprising Food Facts - Mistakes were made - Time to Vent - Relief Valves - Seeing Objectively - Tips you hate - Fear and Self-Loathing - Starting - 2020 recap

How strict?

Well, that's a first. I slept in a bit later than usual this morning and by the time I got out of bed and ate breakfast I ended up completely sucked into a maelstrom of work and never got a chance to post today's thread. Well it's 10:30 PM where I am and I'm finally done with work for the day and can post.

A couple of things precipitated this week's topic:

Basically, I mostly agree with u/AssociateDear6001 that the only way I, personally, have managed to get some of my own bingeing behaviors under control was by accepting that some of my "trigger foods" were going to be available to me and potentially even in my house for my kids or my partner, but I was going to be able to limit how much of my average calories I consumed of them by reducing portion size, frequency or both.

This was echoed by Ms. Ingram in the most recent episode of QQ where she was suggesting that her husband should give himself the Tuesdays when they air QQ as a regular "cheat day" where he might not adhere so closely to his IF feeding window and maybe choose to extend it a bit so he could eat what he cooks, and maybe even enjoy a cocktail, when they are online.

This was also emphasized -- shortly after her comments -- by his accidentally eating a grilled asparagus spear while plating her dinner even though he was outside his feeding window. To which some viewers responded with comments to the effect of "well now you've broken your fast, so you might as well keep going".

So what about you Centurion? What has worked for you? Do you need to exile certain foods from your house altogether, in perpetuity, or were you able to find a happy medium and enjoy these "sometimes foods" and "sometimes situations" without completely upsetting your process? And does a single deviation from your plan mean that the whole day might as well be ignored?

How does a chubby girl become slim thicc?

I’m chubby but i’m not curvy. Naturally, I do not have an ass and I’ve realised that when I carry more weight I don’t have curves in my waist as my love handles fill out however my thighs stay the same. This also gives the illusion of extreme hip dips the bigger I am. I want to be one of them girls that have a big bum yet a small waist. I know my body is capable of the hourglass shape however I don’t know how to get there. I feel like a lot of fitness accounts I see are either skinny girls gaining weight to get fit/grow their glutes or they are chubby girls trying to get skinny. Is there a way I can lose weight whilst growing my glutes?

Weight gain after heavy antibiotics?

Has anyone been able to tie their weight gain/inability to lose weight to the use of heavy antibiotics? I was 190 pounds last March. I got up to 198 the next several months, which was no surprise because I sat on my ass and ate and drank whatever I wanted when quarantine started. I was 200 lbs mid September, and tbh I was okay with it. 10 pounds during all of that felt expected and easily reversible.

Then in mid September I got a MRSA infection, that took several rounds of heavy duty antibiotics, I was on antibiotics for a month. I remember noticing things were tighter and my always present but hidable belly ballooned like I have never experienced. So much so it was tough to bend over to tie my shoes and many other things, like shaving my legs or bikini line. It also limited the sex positions I was comfortable with, and it all seemed to happen SO FAST. By January I was 215 and by the April I was 230.

Also in the beginning of April I had a major pain issue that ended me up in the hospital. Long story short, I have some autoimmune and arthritis type stuff going on, and it brought to light that I have ankylosing spondylitis. After that, many of my health conditions over the last 2 years started to make sense, including horrible colitis. But not the weight gain. As I have been reading and learning, I see there is a lot of research about antibiotics and weight gain, and at 38 I had never even heard of that before.

It just all lines up so perfectly, and explains why I seem to be gaining even when I am super strict. Anyone else experienced this? I see one treatment is a fecal transplant, but I’m wondering about other treatments, and basically anything anyone can tell me about it.

I got fat during covid... 😞

I know this is my fault but having a baby, loosing my job, my house, and having to go on antidepressants certainly didn’t help. I actually was doing really good after the baby was born, but it’s almost a year later and I’ve gained 7 pounds instead of loosing pounds...Also, all that crap about breastfeeding making you lose weight is crap. My body held on to weight like I was going through an apocalypse.

So I am 5’6 - now I weigh 161, I typically weigh 135, my skinniest I was 110 (probably never going to get back to that, the diet isn’t sustainable long-term). Ideally I would like to be 125.

I finally got joined up to a CrossFit gym and have been going 3x a week. I would like to loose 1-2/week. The problem is my eating; I can’t count calories because it stresses me out and when I get stressed I eat ALL the food.

Anyone have a way to eat better without counting calories so I can drop 30 pounds?

Losing fat... thirsty?

Im currently on a 500 cal deficit as I'm trying to cut some fat. I have never felt so thirsty in my life. Im drinking a good 3L of water a day and my body seems to be holding onto all of it. I pee maybe once or twice a day and its always dark yellow.

I dont understand how this is the case when I am drinking more water than I did previously.

When I wasn't cutting, I would drink less water and pee maybe 4 times a day but my pee was light in colour. I rarely felt thirsty.

What is happening? Has this happened to anyone else? Anyone know how I can fix this? I eat 30%carb, 40% protein and 30% fat

[TRIGGER WARNING: MENTION OF ED’S ]

So I want to start this by saying I really don’t know what I’m doing so bare with me.

I started my weight loss journey when I was 14, I was 190 and used very unhealthy methods and dropped to 170 in the span of a couple months. I gained an eating disorder and I am still dealing with it. This was December 2019 - July 2020. I then shortly after, gained most of the weight back but I was still down a couple pounds.

I was dealing with a lot of family issues and food was a way to feel good for me. At this point, it’s now around July! I’ve moved with my dad and was feeling ambitious. I had goals and I knew what weight I wanted to be. We didn’t have a scale and when I went to my dads girlfriend’s (at the time) house I weighed 183. Not pretty but not bad for my height (5’ 11”). I was still down from my initial starting weight.

My dad stopped talking to her so that meant no more scale. Completely in the dark when it comes to what number would eventually show on that scale. I downloaded a calorie counting app and was trying to eat at a deficit of 1500 calories. I have no idea if it worked or not but I am assuming not.

I would go back with my mom on long school breaks and holidays. I’m fully online so I’m able to do that. At my moms house I wasn’t as monitored when it came to eating. My mom never checked to make sure I ate, and never had time to cook so takeout is usually the option. Everyday I was eating 6 bags of chips drinking 4 glasses of juice and finishing the night with pizza and ice cream.

This pattern happens every time I am there so I would say 2 - 3 months of this behavior. Again no scale so I had no idea. That leads us to yesterday, I finally asked my dad to get a scale because I wanted to “see if my sister gained weight” which, was true, but not the only reason. I wanted to see if I had maintained my weight of 180’s and see where I was starting for the upcoming summer.

Today as I’m walking downstairs for dinner, I see it and get nervous. I ignored it and went to eat my dinner. As I’m doing my dishes I bring it up because I thought my sister had gained weight (for context my entire family is really skinny). She puts in the batteries and gets on. She’s 116 and had maintained her weight flawlessly. Me and her predicted I would be around 170 - 180. I step on a little and see the number fly up to 200. I get off immediately and try to laugh it off. A couple seconds later I got on and saw that my weight was 210.6... I felt like crying. My lifetime biggest weight... My dad who is in the military was 190... wearing his uniform.

I’m sharing this story as a cry for help. My mind is racing with thoughts about how I am not going to eat when I go to my moms and how I’ll lose the weight but I’m scared I’ll just fly back up even higher next time. It’s been 8 months since my first post on this subreddit and I’ve gained 40 pounds.

Why did I get fat? Stress. That's it for me.

I've had a pretty chill pandemic. Like, unemployed but okay at first and then working, but sort of part time (I run my own business), which was chill in its own way. Think lots of afternoons off. It was horrible in a lot of ways, but once I was making enough that I didn't feel unemployed or worried about that, it was... I don't know, kind of chill really. Lots of free time. I took up projects, talked to friends on the phone more, went for long walks and runs.

This week, work has finally really REALLY REALLY picked back up. The high levels of stress kind of picked back up. And, frankly, it has been eye opening.

I've been cruising along on my weight loss journey. Pretty quick to begin with, but then I slowed it down in favor of more long distance running (and fueling those runs), some more eating out than when I was strict (which was no eating out), and some more treats. Nothing crazy, just sustainable lifestyle changes that led to me losing ~4-5 pounds a month through exercise and diet. Which is awesome. I've definitely had times where I wished it were faster, but it's also okay that it's not for me. I'm feeling happy.

At least, until this week when the stress was... a bit overwhelming. I stopped being able to fall asleep as easily despite being tired, started eating whatever for dinner because I didn't have time to shop and cook as much (think eggs on toast kind of thing, nothing too nuts). I was.... barely holding on to my calories, to be honest. Not binging or anything, but not holding on to my goals, that was for sure.

Then yesterday was just a crescendo of stress and suddenly I was eating all day. I wouldn't have called it bingeing either, but I probably ate 2,000 calories yesterday (I don't normally "count" calories per-say, just plan out my meals and snacks, so I wasn't exactly "not logging" but rather going off plan. I don't keep track on days I go off plan drastically, just try to enjoy in moderation and it's worked really well for me; I'm not here to be told I'm doing that part wrong, please xx).

All that snacking just felt like... I don't know, like a lightbulb going off. Oh, right, I thought to myself, STRESS is my thing. I don't binge really or eat junk food or any of the other many possible insidious eating habits that can make one gain weight... I SNACK. A snack MASTER, when I'm stressed. And that, THAT SNACKING, is what is making me fat (or was, or whatever).

When I first started losing weight, I couldn't believe how much I had gained. I did some math and it was something like an extra 62 calories per day over the course of the weight gain and I was... shocked by it. It sort of drove home the idea that I wasn't doing anything big, just slowly and surely chipping away at adding a pound or two a year.

Now that I'm over 40 pounds down (woo!!!) and making plans and changes that will allow me to lose another 10 pounds to my sort of goal weight, 20 pounds to my ultimate goal weight (125 pounds!), and then keep all of it off forever while also living a fulfilling life... it was a good reminder of my particular food demon and how stress and work and life and... everything, I guess, have triggered me to gain all 62 of the pounds that I'm in the process of losing.

Anyways, here's to more meal prep, more stress management, and a better balance in overall. Plus, here's to noticing what's causing the problem and, most of all, here's to getting back on the wagon today after "failing" off of it yesterday. Good luck, losers! I hope you slay your own demons.

I didn't know how. So I just did it.

F(31) H:163cm SW:120.4kg CW:117.8kg GW:90kg

Hello all, about this time last week I wrote a rant. It was about how I had believed the lie that weight loss was impossible, and it was too late for me to lose weight. I was desperate, sad and angry. I thought I'd ost my chance to go on comfortable hikes with my parents, to be pretty and to wear nice things.

I said I didn't want to count calories, I didn't want to go on diets, I had too many mental blocks. I just didn't know where to start. Partially cos I didn't WANT to start, dieting is hard and I LOVE pizza and food in general.

Then on implus I bought a kitchen scale. Just to see, I mean my body is a wonderland for sure but it can't be the only place in the known universe that doesn't follow the laws of thermodynamics. If CICO doesn't work out I'm down maybe €15.00 and I would have avoided take out for a while.

It has not been much of an interference in my life at all. I feel silly trying to weight every piece of food, but the two seconds of being self conscious passes and before I know it I'm chowing down. I remembered that I actually like a lot of vegetables, and I love munching on bitter sweet berries throughout my work day. My husband made his world famous beef burgers with fries for dinner twice this week and I just made sure to volume eat the day leading up to it. And it was fine.

And I can not stress this enough- I never got motivation to do it. No burst of energy, no inspiration, nothing clicked,no self loathing moment where I decided enough was enough. honestly just thought "I'll buy the scales, let's see"

I'm now down 2kg (about 4lb) and I know it's just a start but I've never been so excited to see 117 on the scales.

Changing my approach to losing weight by posting here for accountability. Inspired by all the progress I see on here and the supportive community :)

My goals are to manage my health by losing weight, modify my relationship with food to keep it off and get into shape to feel more confident in my body. Starting with CICO (Mediterranean focused) and drinking 3 L of water a day. I’m also going to try exercising once a day for at least 30 minutes for health purposes, starting with lower impact activities.

Open to any suggestions for things that worked/didn’t work for you all and how to stay engaged on here to stay accountable. Motivated more than ever to improve my quality of life in a way that I can control it.

I struggle with portioning - a gripe from a short person

So I really struggle with portioning. I'm 5 foot nothing and I'm also plagued with a pretty slow metabolism (which is a burden bc I love food) and therefore my daily calorific intake should be smaller than the "average". But so much advice, particularly from women who weight train online is along the lines of "you should NEVER eat less than 1500 kcal a day, if you do you're starving yourself". On a normal day I probably eat 1300 kcal, and even with exercise, that tends to maintain my weight. If I eat any more, I put on. I am about 63kg, which is pretty light for most people but overweight for my height so everything is difficult.

Another thing is that so much pre-bought food is portioned for the average weight/height person. So I have to then think harder about how I'm going to portion protein (I'm plant based mainly). Also, exercise burns fewer calories for me, even when I match the intensity, length, etc of others, my Fitbit shows fewer calories burned. I guess cos my muscle fibre lengths are smaller? So I've started working on building more muscle, I figured more fibres more energy burned?

Weight loss when you're short is a nightmare. I see these women that are maybe 4 inches taller than me and weigh the same and their body doesn't look anything like mine.

I feel like the only thing I'm actually good at is "pick up heavy thing put heavy thing down". I suppose because my centre of mass is closer to the ground or something. I'm a shite runner (I do it anyway) my legs are stocky and short.

Any advice?

For people who have lost 50lbs+ how did you trust the process in the earlier stages of weight loss?

Another day doing CICO. I am very determined to drop the weight. My life kind of depends on it. I go to the gym 4-5x a week. I do at least 40 minutes cardio, sets with weights and then call it a day. I eat between 1300-1500 calories per day. I have at least 100lbs to lose. Since March I’ve lost 7lbs, gained 4lbs back but then I wasn’t doing weights. Now I’ve started to be stricter and added in exercise 2 weeks ago.

This is the most I’ve ever done for weight loss. I even got an online fitness coach (not sure how helpful it is but nice to talk to someone about this from time to time that is solely dedicated to me on this journey). Costs a over $100 per month but hey...

Anyway, like most chubster a in the gym, some days I look in the mirror and question whether anything is changing or if it will. Every time I deny myself indulgent food... I just say it’s for the greater good. But I’m not always confident about this.

What do I need to know about this weight loss journey? Do you only see results 2 months in? If the scale isn’t going down does it mean your calories aren’t correct? (No health issues confirmed by doctor).

Thanks!

EDIT: ++ stats SW: 112 KG / 246.8lbs CW: 110.8 KG / 244.8lbs Height: 164cm / 5ft5 Female

Thanks to /u/nofollowthrough who made the 24-Hour Pledge an ongoing /r/loseit institution.

Due to space limitations, this may be a sticky only occasionally. Please find it daily using the sidebar or top message.

Day 1? Starting your weight loss journey on Thursday, 29 April 2021?

Emotional eating

I put the title as emotional eating because this maybe be something more and I wanted to put a trigger warning ahead.

I think I might have an eating disorder.

It’s more than emotional eating, it’s more than splurging, it’s more than a sweet tooth. I’ve stopped buying desserts because I will eat them all in one night. At the hint of any emotional turmoil I feel compelled to eat out or not eat my meal prep or just treat myself. But it goes farther than that- I will make a whole prep of something that would normally be 3 or 4 meals and eat it all in one night. I think I enjoy the feeling of finishing my food and enjoy the feeling of being full.

I don’t know if it’s an eating disorder or just an unhealthy relationship with food. But the urges to act on the behavior above are always stronger than the urges to stop eating and get up and work out. I’m in a mentally good space right now and feel like I have no excuses to not stay on track and I’m feeling really discouraged. I have the tools in most aspects of my life to deal with obstacles, but this seems to be something I can’t get a handle on.

I saw two friends on social media who have been good on their diet and exercise plan and have lost the weight and I feel upset that that could have been me.

Success losing with pre diabetes / insulin resistance

Has anyone had success losing weight if you were diagnosed as pre-Diabetic or had insulin resistance? If so can you please share your story? I have been at this for 6 months and could use some encouragement.

*back story, I never had issues with weight, until I was prescribed Lexapro, I gained 30 pounds in about 6-9 months. When I started trying to lose, is when I stopped gaining (also weaned from the medication.) When I was at my yearly appointment I mentioned it to my doctor, bloodwork indicated everything was normal, but my A1C and insulin levels were prediabetic. He advised me to lose weight and maintain a normal BMI. There’s a lot of conflicting information online (fasting, keto, clean eating, eat healthy carbs + lift weights, low impact cardio, etc.) just curious what has helped others.
