SV, finally back in the 120’s

Oh lordy, here it goes. 29F, 4 feet 11. Starting weight 150(?), current weight 127, and Goal Weight (?).

So a bit of back story, the woman who calls herself my mother, decided that I was obese at 12 years old and 100 pounds. She decided to put me on a diet. That very quickly turned into starving me and making me exercise. I started sneaking food behind her back and binge eating. During the time in which I was under her roof, I was bouncing between 95-120 pounds consistently.

When I was 19 I went into the military, I was 110 pounds. And yes, because I did not learn how to eat healthy from my mother, with in a couple years I ballooned up to 150. I know that’s not a lot, but on a small frame it’s obvious.

So back in 2016/17, my BF moved for work and asked me to move with him, in order for me to do so, I had to loose weight so I could find a Unit to transfer into, and I didn’t loose it in a healthy manner. I stopped eating, and I worked out 7 days a week. Of course i gained it back.

Finally last year around October, I really looked at myself and my eating habits and the amount of self hate I had for myself and realized I needed a real change. So I got on keto, and after some trial and error and multiple macro calculators and reading and asking advice (and also being hard headed about it too), I finally found something that worked for long term.

I started eating about 1000-1300 calories, I cut my carbs to 30-50 grams, I started strength training instead of focusing on cardio, I stopped my focus on numbers on the scale or measurements. Instead I focused on how much better I felt, and how stronger I was, and my confidence level.

Riding Bike To Lose Weight

Hi. So I am a 17 year old male, right now 115~ KG.

I started riding my new bike 4 days ago. My average speed is between 20 and 25 KM/H. But i set the chain to the smallest speed (if thats what it is called), so i pedal harder (and somewhat faster). I am doing this for 2 - 3 hours per day.

I do not eat the best food for weight loss, but i dont eat very much..something like one salad, some fruits and some junk food (a pizza, or a snack or something like that) PER day.

So, are my calories decreasing (burning more than i consume)? Can i lose weight like that? I dont want to lose weight really fast, because i fear getting saggy skin, but something like 5 KG per month?

Mom acts positive with my weight loss journey, but scoffs and makes fun of my sister's fitness journey?

Been overweight my entire life. Like many, I decided to lose weight by making and keeping a healthy lifestyle. Going at it slow, but is great. My mom is happy and makes comments that I'm looking better, my moods are mostly positive and I just seem happier.

Thing is, my oldest sister has been for about a year, lifting weights. She's always posting her progress on her Instagram. She's not only looking great, but kicking ass! However, my mom's reaction to her progress hurts me. She's always commenting how her body is changing and that she looks like a man. Mom also makes comments on her healthy food, shakes, workouts, etc. I'm pretty much doing the same thing, so I don't understand why is it ridiculous that my sister is taking care of her health? So if I ever get to where my sister is now, will my mom just laugh at me too?

Falsely diagnosed with an eating disorder and “treatment” made me go from fit to obese. Please help!

When I was 12 I feel in love with running and I became vegan at 14 because of ethical reasons, my mom got so angry at me cause I lost weight (I was overweight/chubby as a child and my mom loved it!) now that I was slim she didn’t liked me and since she was severe anxiety she took me with a doctor who gave me a bunch of psychiatric medication with the intent of making me gain weight even tho I was eating enough and healthy. They wanted me bigger.

The over doses of psychiatric drugs made me develop a neurological condition called toxic encephalopathy plus a thyroid condition which both had made me obese due to inability to exercise (I was a marathon runner and swimmer, now I am not medically allowed to do much exercise if at all) plus my metabolism is slowed cause I have treatment resistant thyroid disease, also triggered by an autoimmune reaction to the drugs.

I am so angry at my mom and doctors for doing this to me just because I loved running. I was okay. If at all they should have made me reduce running (which they did) but not drug me, specially since I was healthy and eating enough, I had just fallen in love with track and field! Now i have permanent illness and don’t know what to do. I am eating 1700kcal a day and still gaining. I feel so lost.

Edit: at age 14 my height was 156cm and my weight 46kg, which is an 18.8 BMI that was when I was taken with the psychiatrist and drugged. Now I’m 19 my height is 160cm and my weight is 79kg which is a BMI of 31

How was the dating scene improved for you guys since losing weight?

I’m currently on my weight loss journey as I posted here recently (now lost 33 pounds)

One point I made is I am partly doing this for a higher chance of dating girls. I’ll be honest I don’t bother going on dates because its always a no whenever I ask out a girl and I know it’s because of my obese self.

Because of this, I have insecurities about my self-worth asking myself why do I even bother talking to others if I can’t get a date. I had to decide to take initiative sooner or later about my weight. 33 pounds down and I feel more confident every day about my own self-improvement even if I still have a long way to go. Just yesterday a random guy at a gym gave me a thumbs up for pushing myself while doing curls. I still haven’t forgot about that person and think to myself that this will all be worth it soon.

I have to understand losing weight isn’t a guarantee of getting a date for any girl I talk to, but I know my odds will be higher if I lose a lot more weight, especially getting myself out of obesity. Would make a great ice-breaker.

How is the dating situation for your guys?

The Fern and the Bamboo

One day, a man decided to quit. He had had enough. He wanted to quit on his life, on his dreams and hopes, on happiness, on himself.

He went into the woods to have one last talk to God. “God,” he said. “Can you give me one good reason why I shouldn’t quit?” The answer took him by surprise.

“Look around you,” it said. “Do you see the fern and the bamboo?” “Yes,” the man replied. “When I planted the fern and the bamboo, I took very good care of them. I gave them both equal amounts of food and water. I gave them sunlight in spring and protected them from the storms in autumn. The fern quickly grew from the earth. Its brilliant fronds soon covered the forest floor. Yet nothing came from the bamboo seed. But I did not quit on the bamboo.

In the second year, the fern grew even more splendidly than before but nothing came from the bamboo seed. But I did not quit on the bamboo. In year three there was still nothing from the bamboo seed. But I would not quit. In year four, again, there was nothing from the bamboo seed. Still I would not quit.”

“Then in the fifth year a tiny sprout emerged from the earth. Compared to the fern it was seemingly small and insignificant. But day by day the sprout grew. First a shoot, then a seedling, and finally a cane. Within six months, the bamboo cane had risen to a height of 100 feet. It had spent the five years growing roots. Those roots made it strong and gave it what it needed to survive. I

I would not give any of my creations a challenge it could not handle.” “Did you know that all this time you have been struggling, you have been growing? Growing the roots that you need to produce your fruit. I would not quit on the bamboo. I will not quit on you.”

“Don’t compare yourself to others. All of my creations have different purposes, different journeys, and different timescales. The bamboo had a different purpose from the fern. Yet they both make the forest beautiful. Your time will come. You will rise high.”

I went on vacation and DIDN’T gain!!!

Guys. I’m just really psyched about this. I didn’t log my calories while on vacation with family, and in fact was a little trepidatious of the scale when I got home, because I had eaten some unhealthy things (including an obscene amount of Rice Krispie treats, haha.) But we also tried to have some healthy whole foods while traveling, and we hiked a lot and even camped in the desert.

My sister texted me saying she’d lost weight on our trip and that piqued my curiosity about where I was after our trip, and inspired me to get back into my regular habit of weighing myself daily. I not only didn’t gain weight, one day after getting home and I seemingly magically lost 2 pounds! For me, the lesson here is one I’m perpetually relearning, which is probably the key to sustained weight loss. First of all: aim for “good” or even “okay”, and not “perfect”. If you can have a perfect day of eating and exercise, that’s amazing. But those are generally rare. The key is to not let a day when you ate bad or felt disappointed in yourself derail you. Or to use it as an excuse to take more time off than you originally planned. Every day is a fresh slate. You don’t need to wait for the end of the year to reaffirm your goals. You have to do it every day, in small ways. And if you’re going on vacation, let yourself have fun. Eat fun stuff. And when vacation is over… put away the vacation mentality. Another thing I realized is: one day of eating bad, even one WEEK of eating bad, is not enough to cause significant gain. The most important part is all the other days and weeks. So like, eating tons of cookies at Christmas is fine. As long as you’re not mainlining cookies all December.

I’ve lost… gosh, 40 pounds since my highest weight, and I’ve kept it off for several years. It’s pretty fun because I look way better than before. Instead of hating and wanting to Photoshop all my pics, I just feel pleasantly shocked at the change. I didn’t actually realize how slim I am now compared to before until I saw all the vacation pics.

I’ve lost this weight by trying to make my calorie goals as easy as possible, logging my food (except on vacation haha) and setting my goals as actions rather than results. So my goal is not a specific weight, but rather my small daily habits that I know lead to success (mainly CICO, and aiming to consume more natural foods). This has been most helpful because my goals are only the small things I can actually control, rather than highly variable statistics like weight.

Finally, the other thing that’s been weirdly helpful was a thought I had once, that stuck in my head and logicked me into finally eating healthy. “You work every day whether or not you feel like it. Some days you get a lot done, some days you’re completely dead inside, but you show up. (Figuratively, since I’m a freelancer haha.) As a result you’ve made XX progress with your projects, which would seem impossible if not done over a long period of time. If you approach diet like it’s a job you have to show up for, even if you put in the bare minimum some days, you’ll still make lots of progress over time.”
